Hanging Delight_
Location: Stellenbosch, Western Cape Material: Agave
Journeying along an indigenous forest path, the 2016 folly gradually announces itself through a series of shy glimpses. Once revealed in full, a seemingly impossible feat is declared: timber latticed geometries suspended miraculously in thin air! Floating above you, the timber canopy sits frozen in time.

In its last weeks of its cycle, the Agave plant shoots a 4m tall stem proudly into the air - its last go at life. Highly porous due to this fast growth rate, the wood mined from the plant is extremely lightweight. This material property allowed for and inspired the conceptual exploration ‘to create wonder and delight’.
A mystical act that confronts your curiosity and welcomes you in. Is this a space for gathering, a place of contemplation or a timeless encounter with things not yet explained?
The full project team camped just outside the forest where the folly was built, getting to know each other over the shared experience of building something together and revelling in its delight once completed.
Basic timber joinery principles were used. Joints lapped and bound, and the strength of the structure was tested as we built - how many cross braces did we need? could we stagger connection beams? Raising the structure was a feat of the skilled and even tempered as the rest of us watched our hard work slowly raise into the sky above us.
