Follies in the Veld (FITV) is our annual ‘Design + Make’ programme: ideas, action, and learning through making. Each year we experiment with a unique material as we work with willing participants to collectively design and build a large scale spatial intervention.
The limited spaces in each years FITV workshop are available on a ‘first-come first-serve’ basis.
No previous ‘design’ experience required.

→Design and Build
FITV is a hands on building workshop where we come together with a group of interested participants and collaborators to conceptualise an output and set out to build it. Our programme is fast paced and aims to bring people of all backgrounds together in a fun and productive way.
→ Material Exploration
We get to know a particular material intimately: how does it withstand compression or tension? What happens if you burn it? How do you join or assemble it? The materials we choose to explore are often overlooked or under the radar - we want to discover new possibilities and uses for vast amount of unique materials that surround us.
→ Learning Through Making
The aim is to use the process of building and prototyping as a method or a tool for design. Fast reiterations and real-time physical testing promote understanding and support the development of an idea/technique/possibility.
→ Collaborative Making
The outcomes of the workshop are a result of the ideation and work of all participants involved. We are interested in unlocking our inherent individual biases so that we can work as a collective, learn from and about each other and create something that cannot be ‘owned’ by one person, but rather ownership and contribution is felt by all.
→ Experimental Design Pedagogy
Smell chambers that engage the senses, wild cards to turn an idea inside out and one minute sketch sessions are some of the tools that we use to promote creative ideation. Participants are not required to have a design background, we simply tap-into interested energy which translates as engaged and honest outputs.
